Description

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The primary objective of this course is to help students improve their reading strategies and skills so that they will be successful in their content area classes and gain confidence through improved reading skills.  Additionally, you will receive an English Language Arts grade from this class, which encompasses two grades on your report card. 

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Language of Literature textbook, Read 180 rBook and LBook

Reader’s and Writer’s notebook (Black composition notebook)

SFMS Agenda book

1 or 1½ inch binder (clear view optional) with lined paper and 5 tabs

2 sharpened pencils with erasers

2 black or blue pens

Silent Reading book

 

GRADING POLICY

Computer/Read 180                                    30%

Whole group/Small group                  30%

Independent Reading                                    30%

Testing                                                                 10%

Participation*                                                      5%

Total                                                                      100%


GRADING SCALE

90 – 100%                                 A

80 – 89%                                    B

70 – 79%                                    C

60 – 69%                                    D

59% and below                        F

*Participation includes making gains in testing, making extra effort in class and attitude.  This is a reward system, not a punishment grade.  Therefore, students who are not participating in a positive manner will simply not receive extra points. 

Late work will be accepted, but severe grade penalties will be applied.

Absent students will be responsible for any assignments missed during their absence. 


 CODE OF CONDUCT

Because Read 180 students use the computers extensively, they will strictly monitored as to appropriate use of technology.  A student who wanders off of the Read 180 site will be subject to severe computer code infractions usually resulting in a suspension of computer privileges.

Write a thank you letter to Mrs. Jones.

  • Put yourself in Roger's shoes, but fast-forward 10 years in time.  He is now 24 or 25.
  • Write a letter to Mrs. Jones explaining the impact of her actions on your life.  In other words, how did Mrs. Jones affect Roger's life? 
  • What would he say in the letter?  What is he doing with his life now?  Would it be a thank-you letter?
  • Follow the correct letter format.
